Qrrul's Quest - Completed
Qrrul's Quest has been a blast making. As we move into the playtesting phase with RPG Maker Game Jam 2025 wrapping up in two days (2025-04-18), I just wanted to share a little about how the development has gone. Link to Game
Qrrul's Quest
______________________________________________________________________________________________
Can you defeat death itself?
Venture forth on your quest as Captain Qrrul, an undead pirate paladin, seeking to end undeath for all.
Hunt down evil necromancers, uncover ancient secrets, and battle against vicious demon monstrosities in the fantasy world of Myria.
Qrrul's Quest is a JRPG with a story driven progression with meaningful, turn-based battles that will challenge players to think about their choices of attacks, magics, items, and special skills.
Your choices will matter both inside and out of combat, so beware of pissing off the wrong NPC.

Filled with mystery, intrigue, and adventure, this JRPG is driven by it's comedic crew of miscreants:
Captain Qrrul, the no nonsense undead-paladin leader of the crew driven by his desire for redemption (or revenge)
Maxinne, the saucy, swashbuckling Elfien first mate who keeps the others in line when they start to sail off course
Pogo, the goblin engineer equipped with wacky gadgets and too many poop jokes
Nugget, the thieving lookout whose sharp knives are only outdone by his wicked tongue
All of them be scallywags, rapscallions, and bamboozlers but by the end of tings, they be learnin' somethin. - Old Jerry Two Fingers

I hadn't made a game in RPG Maker for a few years, having plenty of work writing elsewhere. But this was a fun dive back into creating a game from scratch in this nostalgic engine. I can't say I made something crazy when it comes to mechanics but focusing on the story, I think we really exceeded expectations in creating a funny and dramatic narrative.
For the project, I had the pleasure of working with a skilled composer: Francesco Fabrizio, Portfolio, and artists Stitches, Portfolio. They both really brought some awesome elements out in their contributions, enhancing the storytelling and improving the immersion for players (or so I hope). And also a big thank you to Artem Chelpanov for playtesting! (So many tiny bugggss!)
As the story goes, it follows the adventures of Captain Qrrul and his crew of miscreants as they seek to find out who (or what) is behind the undead that plague their world. With the help of a Goddess, they start on their journey but it doesn't exactly take them where they expected to go.
Originally, I planned several more levels for the game and might be able to add them in at a later date, but thankfully had the wherewithal to cut them early on in production when I realized how long it would take me to create each level with proper switches and triggers and write the dialogues for the different characters. With over 7000 words of dialogue written, it certainly plays out as a story/narrative driven game while still having a good amount of meaningful combat to keep players engaged. Lots of improvements could be made, but within the time constraints of a single month, I think we made something really fun.
Here is to another game set in the world of Myria created!
The game is live now but we are still Beta Testing, so if you play it before Monday April 21, please send any feedback you have!
